Tennessee's Third Grade Retention Law- One Size Does Not Fit All
An Awakening Moment
The reactions of so many parents on social media have been of shock, concern, and defeat. Tennessee’s Third Grade Retention law, instituted in 2011 but revised legislatively in 2021, has resulted in the average 60% of students statewide who tested below proficient retaking and remediating in literacy over the summer and into the 2023-24 school year.
Many, perhaps most, parents do not realize the high degree of involvement that state government has in public education. An overwhelming number of reactions I have read decry the fact that missing one too many questions on the ELA portion of the TCAP test is all it takes to potentially set their student back a whole school year.
We feel that pain. We know, as parents instinctively do, that success or failure is not determined by a test score.
